Palau is also famous for the huge diversity and accessibility of its dive sites that reveal hundreds of World War II shipwrecks, amazing reef and drift dive locations, and sparkling emerald waters that team with thousands of colourful fish, sharks, coral and anemones. If there is one place whose natural beauty and idyllic lifestyle inspires anyone who visits, it’s Palau.
Palau’s Pristine Natural Environment and Beauty
Sharks in particular are deeply respected by Palauans, and thankfully a ban has been in place since 2003 with the creation of a shark sanctuary that covers an area of more than 230,000 square miles. That allows you to mingle with big fish in the underwater channels at Blue Corner and other sites such as Peleliu Wall. Imagine an up close encounter with the friendly Napoleon wrasse, a huge yet gentle fish that seems to enjoy affection.
Everywhere you look there are dazzling numbers of sharks, rays, and hawksbill turtles - an endangered species that you will almost certainly encounter when diving the reefs. If you’re lucky, they might be even inquisitive enough to approach you up close, their giant bodies effortlessly skimming through the water.
Ancient Underwater Stalactites at Chandelier Cave
As you swim toward the walls and ceiling you'll see the stunning stalactites come into focus and they pierce the still water, mirroring into the darkness. All four chambers have air pockets where divers can surface end enjoy the smooth crystalline structures. You'll be amazed at the beauty of the formations.
As you return from the caves the view of other divers coming in is breathtaking and is a wonderful photo opportunity.
A Landscape Full of Surprises
There’s nowhere else like it on earth and it will make you realise how inventive and surprising nature can be. Palau isn’t just about underwater experiences though - the most relaxing and serene way to explore is to paddle a kayak through beautiful mangrove swamps with crystal clear, shallow water, ducking under low arches in the cliffs that lead to enclosed, secret lakes.
It’s a stunning landscape that always surprises, with something new and unexpected around every corner.
