The Founders of Lijiang
Incredible Scenery and Traditional Retreats
Nearby is the imposing Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, also known as Yulong Mountain. Easily seen from a vantage point in the Old Town, the snow-capped peak looks like a jade dragon, sitting comfortably above the clouds. It is a tranquil, mesmerising area, home to many rare species of plants and animals, housing a quarter of the different varieties of vegetation in the country, including 400 different trees. State protection has been awarded to much of the wildlife, as well as some primeval communities who look after them all. Climbing to the summit has been made easier with the addition of staircases and hiking paths, plus the ability to buy oxygen tanks, so that the incredible views over Lijiang can be fully appreciated.
Boutique Hotels and Tented Villas
The modern architecture of the hotels is a pleasing contrast to the older, traditional buildings found in Lijiang. There is even a “glamping” option, with tented accommodation offering intimate and cosy rest and relaxation on sumptuous beds, accompanied with by lighting and the sound of sleep bleating in the background.
Lijiang is a historical, mysterious place that successfully mixes the old and traditional with a modern way of life. The contrast of the busy town with the rolling hills means that no two days are ever the same. There are many hidden treasures still to be discovered.
